When the first super hot day of summer arrives the last thing you want is to switch on your AC unit to find it doesn’t work…

If the air con unit has been left to hibernate over winter then they can sometimes kick up a bit of fuss once they are woken up in summer. If you want to try and avoid having to call out an air conditioning company each summer, there are a few general maintenance tasks you can undertake yourself.

Clean and Change Your Filters

This is the most obvious task but you would be surprised how often our air conditioning company finds that customers have been neglecting this job. Air conditioning unit filters need to be changed regularly, and whilst you are in the process of doing this a quick clean can go a long way toward preserving your AC unit.

Filters are easily clogged and this build up of debris means air-flow is restricted, which in turn means your unit has to work harder to push out air, which then means you spend more on energy, which isn’t ideal.

Check for Leaky Pipes and Ducts

You should keep an eye out for loose joints and small holes in ductwork that can cause leaks. Even a tiny leak can hugely affect the efficiency of your whole air conditioning unit. Small leaks can be sealed up with rubber or fabric tapes. However, if you notice a big leak this is a definite sign that you need to call out an air conditioning company.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can do wonders for your AC unit and your electricity bill. You can install these at any time but it is a good idea to do this before summer picks up and your AC unit is put to use more.

A programmable thermostat keeps your home at a constant, comfortable temperature. The thermostat avoids you needing to turn the unit off and on and off again, which relies on your AC unit working overtime. The thermostat also offers you convenience and it means you can set the AC to cool the house just before you get home from work.

If you would like help installing a programmable thermostat, or you want a service to get your AC unit ready for summer, AC installs air conditioning company can offer you a range of services.
